About this calculator

In the US a restaurant tip of 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is customary, with 20% now common for good service. Delivery, bars and services each have their own norms, covered in the questions below.

Splitting is where mental math goes wrong. Enter the number of people and the calculator shows each share, with an option to round every share up to a whole dollar.

Tip and split

Tip = Bill × Tip % ÷ 100; Per person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ People

Many people tip on the amount before tax; enter the pre-tax subtotal if you prefer that.

Example

A $86.40 bill with a 20% tip is $17.28 in tip and $103.68 in total. Split four ways, each person pays $25.92.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

15% to 20% of the bill before tax is standard for table service in the US, with 20% common today. Tip more for exceptional service or large groups.

Should I tip on the total with tax?

Etiquette says before tax, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small; enter whichever amount you prefer.

How much do you tip for delivery?

Commonly 15% to 20%, with a minimum of a few dollars for small orders or bad weather.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

Not always. Some restaurants add a mandatory service charge that may not go to the server. Check the receipt before adding a tip on top.
