About this tool

Enter when you started and finished each day and how long your unpaid break was. The calculator handles overnight shifts that cross midnight and adds up the week, both in hours and minutes and as decimal hours for payroll.

Add your hourly rate to see pay. Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5 times their rate for hours over 40 in a workweek; the overtime multiplier can be changed.

Hours per day

Hours = End − Start − Break; Overtime = max(0, Weekly hours − 40)

If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift is treated as crossing midnight. Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60.

Example

Five days of 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute break is 8.5 hours a day, 42.5 hours a week. At $22 an hour that is 40 × $22 + 2.5 × $33 = $962.50.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours.

Are breaks paid?

Under federal rules, short breaks of 5 to 20 minutes are paid, while meal breaks of 30 minutes or more where you are fully relieved of duty usually are not. Some states have stricter rules.

When does overtime start?

Federally, after 40 hours in a workweek. Some states, such as California, also require overtime after 8 hours in a day.

Can it handle night shifts?

Yes. If a shift ends after midnight, enter the end time as normal and it is counted as the next day.
